Yoga Mats - Finding The Perfect Yoga Mat For You

Yoga is deeply relaxing, as well as energizing, and you can do it anywhere. One of the most popular questions for anyone new to yoga is: "What's the best kind of yoga mat for me?"

There are many different kinds of yoga mat from which you can choose. Many are made from polyester latex, and have a slip-resistant surface. "Sticky" mats, which have a textured synthetic surface, are also very popular. Practitioners of styles like Ashtanga yoga, and Bikram yoga often prefer to use both a sticky mat and a rug, placing the rug over the sticky mat.

Of course, you don't need to buy a yoga mat if you don't want to: can just use a thick towel, or a rug, as your yoga mat.

Your choice of yoga mat is also influenced by where you'll be exercising.

Where Will You Do Your Yoga Exercises?

If you're doing your yoga in front of the TV on a carpeted floor, you can just use a thick towel, or a folded blanket. On the other hand, if you're taking lessons at a yoga studio, it's awkward to carry a blanket, so ring the studio before you start, and ask what kind of mat they recommend. They may even sell yoga mats. Sticky and other mats are often sold with a carrier, so you can sling the mat over your shoulder on your way to practice.

Eco Yoga Mats For a Cleaner Environment

In the past few years, environmentally conscious types of yoga mats have become popular. The older styles of mats are made from PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride). Since the manufacture of PVC releases toxins into the atmosphere, "eco" mats have been created from materials like cotton, jute and rubber.

So the kind of yoga mat you choose is up to you. Have fun with your yoga. It's your time to refresh, relax, and be with yourself. Of the many different types of yoga mat, you'll find the perfect one for you.

Hatha Yoga

Patanjali collected the yoga knowledge available in 2 A.D. and wrote a treatise called ‘Yoga Sutra.’ The yoga of Patanjali has 8 limbs to be practiced in sequence. They are Yama (restraint), Niyama (observance), Asana (posture), Pranayama (breathing), Pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (ecstasy). The end of yoga after Samadhi would be the union of individual consciousness with the universal consciousness.

In the modern age, yoga has come to mean basically ‘Hatha Yoga,’ ‘Ha’ meaning sun and ‘Tha’ meaning moon unites in Hatha Yoga. It is the symbolic union of active and passive energies, the opposites. The Hatha Yoga aims to unite harmoniously the body, mind and spirit, and create a healthy, supple and strong body and a relaxed, stress free mind.

In the late 19th century, T. Krishnamacharya, a yoga teacher in Mysore Palace in south India, was the source of most modern Hatha Yoga. His disciples B.K.S. Iyengar, K.Pattabhi Jois and Indira Devi, and his son T.K.V. Desikachar, were instrumental in setting up their schools and spreading Yoga throughout the world, particularly in America.

Each one has its own name, but it is only a matter of stress rather than substance. They are Ashtanga Yoga of Pattabhi Jois, Iyengar Yoga of B.K.S. Iyengar, Vishnu Yoga of T.K.V. Desikachar, Bikram Yoga of Bikram Choudhry, Sivananda Yoga of Vishnu Sivandandam, Integral Yoga of Swami Sachidananda and Ananda Yoga of Swami Kiriananda.

Yoga as an exercise is vastly different from calisthenics or aerobics. In yoga the body does not do any movement, but holds different postures that are designed to direct the life energy to all parts of the body. The respiratory and pulse rate drops. The endocrine system increases activity.

The benefits of yoga are many. It helps in managing many illnesses for which there are no cures. It helps in building a supple and strong body. But its major contribution is in relaxing the body and mind, relieving stress and rejuvenating the energy level. Positive thinking and feel-good factors increase amongst practitioners of yoga. The degree of concentration in yoga students is very high.

With some amount of commitment and regular practice of Hatha Yoga, there will be a substantial difference to the quality of life in the modern age.

The History of Yoga

The history of yoga is long and steeped in tradition. Contrary to what some people may believe, yoga was not developed as the newest way to slim down so they could fit into a smaller pants size.

The history of yoga goes back 5,000 years. It originated in India, and the first time the word yoga was found in written form was in the Rig Vada, one of the sacred texts used by Vedic priests. Yoga is a means of achieving spiritual enlightenment.

Originally, yoga techniques were passed down from teacher to student through word of mouth. These techniques had never been written down until the Indian sage Patanjali wrote down a systematic method of yoga in the Yoga Sutras. Patanjali is considered to be the father of yoga.

According to Patanjali, there are eight limbs of yoga, which lead to the ultimate goal of enlightenment.

Yama - abstaining from violence, stealing, lust, greed

Niyam - developing devotion, purity, studiousness, contentment, discipline

Pranayama - controlling the breath

Pratyahara - going inward and withdrawing attention from the outside world

Dharana - concentration

Dhyana - meditation

Samadhi - merging with the universal consciousness

The Swami Vivekananda added to the history of yoga by bringing it to America. In 1893, he addressed the Parliament of World Religions and discussed the path of yoga. As a result of his speech, it quickly began to blossom as a practice in many areas of the country. Yoga has since gained major popularity in the United States and many different styles including Hatha, Bikram, and Iyengar, are practiced by millions of people.

Knowing the history of yoga can help you, the practitioner, realize the richness that it has to offer. More than just a means of being fit and trim, yoga can help you live a healthy, whole, and empowered life.

Yoga For Weight Loss

Many people claim that yoga helps with weight loss. However, there is no hard and fast scientific data to support this claim. Everyone acknowledges that yoga helps stretch the muscles and increases flexibility and limberness, but now people are claiming that you can use yoga for weight loss.

It may be hard to understand how yoga can help you lose weight, but studies have shown that people who practice yoga do lose weight. The weight loss is probably not the result of burning calories through strenuous exercise, because most yoga exercise is not that strenuous. Most people believe the weight loss is a result of reducing stress and learning to avoid bad habits that lead to overeating. By reducing stress, yoga helps you lose weight.

Any exercise that helps you get fit and in shape will help you lose weight. Also, by helping you reduce stress in your life, yoga helps eliminate destructive habits which lead to overeating, which in turn helps you lose weight. Yoga is very effective at reducing stress in your life, and a person living a stress free life tends to have fewer self sabotaging bad habits like compulsive overeating.

There may not be a proven medical link for weight loss through yoga, but this doesn’t mean that yoga isn’t beneficial. Yoga contributes to your general well being through stress reduction and flexibility. It may be that weight loss from yoga is a result of the other benefits that come from yoga.

Regardless of what individual facet causes it, you can use yoga for weight loss. It may not be the only thing in your life that results in weight loss, and it may not be the fastest way to lose weight, but there are few things in life that have as many positive benefits for you as yoga does. I guess that you can think of using yoga for weight loss as a nice, additional bonus!

Cheap Yoga Mats

Yoga is an ancient Indian exercise form that involves the use of certain body postures and breathing exercises for body, mind and spiritual health. Yoga is done by sitting, standing or lying down on a mat. Yoga mats should be very comfortable, as the postures should be done in a very relaxed manner. Good yoga mats even enhance the postures.

The main features of a good yoga mat are: durability, strength, softness, and ability to stay firm without crumpling. It should also grip the floor effectively and not allow the user to slide across the floor on the mat. Yoga mats are very easy to maintain. They just need once-in-a-while washing with a mild detergent, either in a machine or by hand.

A yoga mat is the only investment required for yoga. A good-quality mat can range from $20 to $45 or $50. However, there are cheaper mats available for as low as $10. These are made of regular cotton, without too many frills.

Cheap yoga mats are available in various styles, patterns and colors. Traditional mats were made of cotton or jute, but these days, many other materials are being used for yoga mats. Yoga mats are generally 4-5mm thick, since these mats can be stiff enough not to crease on the floor while being flexible enough to be rolled up, carried and washed. Cheap yoga mats should also handle repeated washing. Some yoga mats these days are also non-toxic and eco-friendly. Other different kinds of cheap yoga mats are: sticky mats, travel mats, foldable mats, lightweight mats and others. These mats are available in plain colors as well as interesting colors and patterns.

Cheap yoga mats can be found at exclusive yoga stores. The best source for finding a good, cheap yoga mat is the internet. There are websites that host the best deals on Yoga Mats, which can be compared as well as ordered online. Some suppliers also give discounts on yoga mats, like 50% off or 30% off. Such deals can be seen on the internet.

Nude Yoga and Naked Aerobics

We all came in our birthday suits - That's how God made us! Nudity is completely natural. In fact clothes can be disturbing, certainly so in aerobics - it prevents airflow around the body. Clothes also invite - encourage growth of germs - microscopic fungi and bacteria, especially in warm humid areas. People who do naked aerobics can sweat freely people who perspire in clothes are not pleasing to our nose. Those who perspire naturally smell better!

There are benefits of being nude too. For instance, wearing shorts and trousers will raise the temperature of the testicles (in males, of course). This then results in hindrance of sperm growth thereby reducing the sperm shack and male hormones which in turn reduces fertility. It can also cause impotence in both genders. Not just accidental nudity, this is purposeful.

More advantages : No sweaty clothes to wash; Cheaper designer-competitiveness; no fighting for a place with Peter Alexander fashion designer (though I love designer clothes myself). In fact this is goal-orientated, if I may say so because you can concentrate more on building those muscles or firming those gluts.

Naked aerobics yoga is a good exercise and does exist. In fact, quite a few people really prefer doing nude yoga. It helps articulate your natural emotions and let you speak for yourself. Nudity adds to the physical and emotional health of the individual. After all, it’s nice to feel the natural air slapping on your skin and feeling the sweat roughly come out of the inside. As long as you don’t mind dangly bits sometime getting in the way or seeing the nether regions that would be exposed in a simple exercise such as ‘touch your toes’.

Nude Yoga is nourishing and exfoliating. You will feel its effect on your body and notice that the body has changed because you have bared it all. A sizeable number of men and women in the U.S. find nudist yoga as a source of great relaxation and mental peace. There’s a significant increase in nudist yoga practitioners or seekers; so many nudist yoga classes are conducted the world over. There are many naturist clubs and resorts where nude exercise is encouraged and welcomed. There are videos and books available as well to help you pursue this style of exercising.

If embarrassment be thrown to the dogs would you wear clothes at all times?

Nude Yoga and Naked Aerobics

What is Yoga?

As part of the Hindu religion and way of life, traditional yoga philosophies require students to attain complete peace in body and mind through behavior, diet and meditation. In Sanskrit the word Yoga translates to union or unite.

Most people in the United States are interested in what is known as Hatha Yoga, the practice of poses (asanas) with particular attention being paid to breathing. Practicing asanas is one of the 8 "limbs" of yoga. Traditionally practiced to achieve unity between the body and mind, which in turn elevates the spirit.

Many people are intimidated to practice yoga due to the misconceptions that one must be naturally flexible to do so, or that ones religious beliefs will be challenged. Some refer to yoga as merely stretching; I do this myself to cut down on the intimidation factor for others. Stretching is, of course involved, but yoga is the practice of poses or postures, with attention being paid to breathing. The goal is to develop a balance of strength and flexibility within the body. I can only say in reference to the religion factor that although yoga is a part of the Hindu religion, it is not in itself a religion, and some of the benefits obtained by a regular practice would only, in my opinion, enhance and strengthen your religious convictions, whatever they may be.

Do You Need A Yoga Exercise Mat

One of things I like best about yoga, you don’t need any specialized equipment. If you are exercising on carpet, you don’t even need a mat. However, a yoga mat is a great piece of equipment to have, and some people wouldn’t even think of trying yoga exercise without using a mat.

Yoga mats come in a variety of types, styles and thicknesses. A typical yoga mat has a sticky surface to help with friction when obtaining your poses. Some yoga mats are thicker than others, and these can really help when you get on your knees.

Yoga mats come in a multitude of colors and patterns, so you can express your personality (and find your mat when it’s time to pack up and leave the gym). This isn’t George Orwell’s 1984, you aren’t stuck with the same color and pattern as every other yoga mat. If fact, you can even have your T-shirt match your yoga mat.

If you are just starting out, you really don’t need a yoga mat, especially if you are working out at home. Most gyms will lend you a yoga mat or rent one to you. But if you are serious about yoga exercise, you should invest in a good quality yoga exercise mat as soon as you can. After all, do you really want to use a mat that some one else has sweated on?

The great thing about a yoga exercise mat, they are inexpensive. It is possible to buy a pretty good yoga mat for $15 to $20. Of course, you can spend a lot more for a mat, but it really isn’t necessary.

The type of yoga mat you purchase depends on several factors, including what type of yoga you practice. If you are using the more active and fast pace exercises, you may want thicker mat. You may also find the thicker yoga exercise mat useful if you are suffering from joint problems.

There are lots of different types of yoga exercise mats available, and you should find the mat that is right for your needs.

The poses for chair yoga are hatha yoga adapted for someone sitting down, or standing an using a chair for support.

It's particularly valuable if you suffer from any of the various forms of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), and of course if practiced daily, your chair yoga will help to prevent RSI too.

Chair yoga also relieves stress. If you're rehearsing a presentation, do some side stretches, and bend forward, and take a few moments for pranayama. Even five minutes of gentle practice will relax you, and give you a burst of energy.

How to Become a Yoga Teacher Who Everyone Wants to Learn From

What are a Yoga teacher’s biggest challenges? Is it the hours of Yoga teacher training? Is it the continuing education? No, education and certification can be a challenge, but it’s none of these issues that make up the biggest challenge.

The largest challenges Yoga instructors face are influencing students to independently take care of their own health and to maintain their Yoga practice. It is extremely difficult to change the way people think.

The saying, “People are creatures of habit,” is so true. If a student sat on the couch for decades, a Yoga teacher needs extraordinary powers of influence to keep that student from going back to the life of a “couch potato.” So, what can a Yoga teacher do? Here are some ideas for Yoga teachers to retain student interest.

Inspire them with your passion for Yoga. Have you ever had a low energy day? If you did, and you taught a Yoga class, you can bet your students had a feeling something was not quite right about that class. The amount of energy you bring into a class is transparent.

If you are a motivator, and you strive for excellence, you will inspire your students to be the same. The only way to lead a Yoga class is by being an inspiration. If you are anything less, you will resemble the masses who hate their jobs. I have yet to meet a Yoga teacher who does not like to teach classes. Therefore, make sure your students know how much you love Yoga.

Mastering Yoga Poses

Yoga is an ancient practice that strengthens the body and mind. Learning about and engaging in yoga can relieve stress and help you tone all the muscles of your body. Master the art of yoga poses, and you will have a routine that you can engage in anytime, anywhere to help you deal with all of life’s little problems. Yoga is the key to empowerment in your life.

Before you can master yoga poses, you have to learn about and practice yoga positions and postures. These are the building blocks of the art of yoga. The right postures in yoga will help you to safely and effectively use yoga poses in the way they are intended. Yoga positions such as ananas will exercise the muscles, glands and nerves as they work to keeping the body and mind healthy.

Another important step in learning yoga poses is learning to breathe properly. Breathing is one of the ways yoga can reach beyond the physical realm and offer mental stimulation, relaxation and growth. You will find that pairing yoga with proper breathing will offer you a new level of mental and physical enjoyment through this exciting art form.

The most common form of yoga is Hatha yoga. This is the basic practice we know today. Hatha yoga uses healing yoga poses to refresh and stimulate your mind and body. Its popularity is a testament to its powers and it is a great way to ensure a more pain-free and relaxing existence.

In our health conscious world, it seems that there is always a new exercise trend. But yoga exercises have been around for thousands of years, so you know you can trust them to be a solid way to improve your health. Whether you need to rid your body of chronic pain, free your mind from the stress of day to day life, or you just want a refreshing daily routine, yoga poses are for you.

Yoga is a great way to strengthen your mind and body and get in shape as well as a great way to unwind after a long day. Yoga Visualization for Empowerment - Introduction

Within Yoga practice is a secret, which should be easy enough for the public to grasp. Meditation and visualization could advance all of human kind. The power of visualization is enough by itself, but meditation teaches us to focus on one thought at a time. This is such a challenge, that most of the public would rather practice Yoga postures, and forget about meditation.

If you have practiced Yoga for one session, you realize that Yoga postures are much easier to focus on than it is to control your mind. Many people feel very uncomfortable trying to harness their minds. No wonder the ancient Yogis compare the mind to a monkey. The mind is restless and resists the concept of self-mastery.

Yet, the ancient Yogis were also concerned about combining Yogic meditation, with visualization, for egotistical purposes. It has commonly been thought that some people would misuse this aspect of Yoga for acquiring material, power, and fame.

The ancient Yogis had nothing to fear, because a Yoga practitioner would need much practice to reach Samadhi (The eighth limb of Yoga - Complete Meditative absorption); there are many levels of Samadhi.

However, Samadhi, and the eight limbs of Yoga, described by Patanjali, are largely ignored by many Hatha Yoga practitioners around the world. Many Hatha Yoga practitioners have developed a “ranking system” for Yoga. Ask most students what advanced Yoga is, and they will mention a difficult Asana (Yoga posture).

It is not their fault, because their Yoga teachers think the same thing. Many Yoga teachers do not really understand the concept of Samadhi, and they do not reflect on the Yoga Sutras.

Soccer and Yoga Make a Great Team

It may seem that yoga do not have much in common, but yoga can really help improve your soccer game. Yoga is great for the young and the old, women and men... and even soccer players. Some men have avoided yoga because they think of it has a women’s trend, and that it certainly isn’t a sport. That’s right, yoga isn’t a "sport," but practicing yoga can certainly improve how well you play in whichever sport you do play.

Yoga and people who do yoga are certainly not to be laughed at – yoga can be very difficult. Not everyone can do all of the poses, and some poses take years before your body has learned to do them correctly. And, contrary to some people’s belief, you can even break a sweat during yoga, especially if you are practicing Bikram yoga. Bikram yoga is yoga performed in a room heated up to 100 degrees Farenheit! Your body becomes more flexible in the heat.

Yoga emphasizes balance, flexibility and mental discipline. Yoga is not just for the body but for the mind, too. Sports are about the mind, too, but sometimes people can forget that. Sometimes people concentrate too much on a skill out on the field but fail to picture it in their minds. Mental imagery can really prepare someone for soccer.

Yoga also loosens the muscles and takes pressure off of your joints. It can really keep you fit. Simple yoga exercises are a great way to loosen up before or after a game or practice.

The amount of injuries that a team has can also be reduced if that team practices yoga. Yoga strengthens muscles in a way that makes it harder to injure them later.

Before you scoff at the idea of doing yoga in addition to your soccer practices, you should try it. Yoga and soccer make a great team, and they can also make your team better. Why not try this ancient art?

Yoga Positions – Positioning Yourself For Health

Yoga – the ancient art of breathing and stretching – has long been favored as a natural way to achieve optimal fitness and ward off stress. Today, more and more people are turning to yoga to help them achieve what traditional exercise has not – a mind/body connection that offers a greater level of health and inner peace.

Yoga positions consist of holding certain postures of the body while performing deep and precise breathing techniques. There are many types of yoga practice to which different people prescribe but there is a common thread that unites all sects of yoga. They all have various postures or positions that are common to yoga in general.

Some common yoga positions include:

Seated Yoga Position – Seated yoga positions often focus on learning disciplined breathing techniques. Participants sit cross legged in an erect position and learn to control their diaphragm and let their breathing work for them.

Standing Yoga Position – Standing yoga positions concentrates on improving flexibility and spinal alignment while still utilizing breathing techniques.

Supine Yoga Position - Supine yoga positions lengthen and strengthen the spinal column thus benefiting parts of the back.

Belly Down Yoga Position - Belly down yoga positions concentrate on abs and upper body strength. Participants are asked to lift themselves from the ground and perform a series of stretch positions in a fluid motion.

Balancing Yoga Position - Balancing yoga positions improve flexibility and strengthen back and abdominal muscles. Holding a particular position for an extended period of time while balancing body weight uses muscles much more then you would think.

Twisting Yoga Position - Twisting yoga positions stretch the body – most significantly the spinal column.

Yoga can be a wonderful way to tone your body, increase flexibility, improve cardiovascular function, and lower stress. Research yoga online or turn to professionals who practice and teach yoga. A local class can be just the thing to turn you on to the benefits of yoga positions.

Bikram Yoga

Yoga is at least about 5,000 years old. The Hindus of the Indus valley civilization developed yoga as a practical device to unite the individual self with the Brahman, the universal self. It was codified about 2,000 years back into a system by Patanjali in his work ‘Yoga Sutra.’

His yoga, known as Ashtanga Yoga (or eight-limbed yoga) came to be the authority on yogic practice. These eight limbs are to be practiced in sequence to achieve its spiritual end. In the modern age yoga came to be understood as ‘Hatha Yoga,’ which practices the third and fourth limbs of Ashtanga Yoga - Asanas and Pranayama.

Hatha Yoga, meaning sun-moon yoga, aims to unite the active and passing energies of the human beings. It harmonizes the body-mind relationship, and achieves a balance. The body becomes supple and strong. The mind relaxes and the stress eases. The internal systems, such as blood circulation, nervous system, digestive system and the endocrine system, are improved.

There are many systems of ‘Hatha Yoga,’ such as Ashtanga Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Vini Yoga, Integral Yoga, Sivananda Yoga and Bikram Yoga. Basically they hold postures that exercise the system. It is formulated by different teachers, giving importance to different aspects of Hatha Yoga.

Bikram Choudhry, the founder of Bikram Yoga, was born in Kolkatta in 1946. He became a disciple of Bishnu Gosh, the brother of Paramahamsa Yogananda, at the age of four. His mastery of the Hatha Yoga technique was so good that he continuously won the Indian Yoga championship, and retired undefeated at a very young age. Bikram started many training centers for yoga, on the direction of his master Bishnu Gosh. Later, he founded his own system of yoga known as Bikram Yoga.

Bikram Yoga is a series of 26 postures, done inside a heated room. The temperature is maintained at about 90 – 100o. This warms the body naturally, and the postures are easily accomplished. The series starts with standing postures, backward bends, forward bends and twists. Each posture is repeated twice. The full routine takes about 90 minutes.

Bikram has a school in Los Angeles where teachers impart yoga practice. He also travels throughout America organizing workshops and seminars.

Yoga Teacher Certification or Registration - Part 2

What about established Yoga teachers who don’t have a diploma? Yoga teaching credentials are a relatively new concept. Many “seasoned” Yoga teachers have suddenly found themselves in need of credentials.

Most of the certified Yoga teachers are from Hatha Yoga, one of Hatha Yoga’s many sub-styles, or Kundalini Yoga. This may be due to the physical aspect of these Yoga styles. Yoga teachers, who are without credentials, should contact a certifying body to inquire about recognition or credit for past experience.

What is the “right’’ Yoga credential to have? There really is no right or wrong Yoga credential. A Yoga teacher should have a minimum of 200 hours of study. The Yoga teacher course selected should cover all the facets of Yoga, but when considering liability, anatomy, kinesiology, physiology, safety, modifications, props, and contraindications are of prime importance.

When I hire a Yoga teacher; safety, communication, and knowledge override any credentials. The teaching performance within a Yoga class is more important than any other factor. This is why some Yoga studios do an evaluation of a new Yoga teacher on a trial basis.

When should I become a Registered Yoga teacher? The fact is you don’t have to join a Yoga teacher’s association or become a registered Yoga teacher, to teach Yoga in any country. In Great Britain, you have a choice to register with the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) or The Independent Yoga Network. Until recently, I thought BWY was the sole regulator of Yoga within the UK. Apparently this is a myth.

Some studios may require you to be a registered Yoga teacher, but most will not. In North America, South America, Australia, Asia, and most of Europe, Yoga teachers are not required to be registered. However, certification may be required.

Who regulates Yoga?

There is no government backed regulator of Yoga. If you are in doubt, contact a local Yoga teachers association to be assured of local laws and regulations.

It is a wise practice to network with local Yoga teachers and Yoga teacher associations. This will keep you informed and educated about the changes within Yoga. You will also learn about workshops, seminars, retreats, and Yoga camps that are coming to your area.

Lastly, Yoga teachers should stay on top of information concerning sports medicine, anatomy, kinesiology, physiology, safety, modifications, and contraindications. The safety of every Yoga student is the single most important factor involved in teaching Yoga.

Yoga

Yoga traditionally conjures up images of long hair, loin cloths and incense burning in a darkened room with strange music playing! It had an almost cultish persona. Nowadays your gran is quite likely to tuck her Yoga mat under her arm and head on down to the local gym for an hour of Yoga and meditation. Yoga is coming out of the darkened room and is being embraced in it many forms by old and young alike.

Yoga originated in India. It is considered one of the most ancient forms of self-improvement exercise in history. Yoga was formally documented around 200BC by one of India's most famous Yoga masters, Patanjali, who wrote the 'Yoga Sutras'.

Traditionally though, the ancient art of Yoga is passed down from Master to student and so on.However, throughout the years, Yoga has undergone many changes and new streams of Yoga have been developed from the original sources.

Also, during history, when India was invaded, many texts that documented Yoga techniques and teachings were destroyed. It was not until the early 1900 century that Yoga was revived by Yoga Master Tirumalai Krishamacharya, known as a 'Yogi'. Following this time, Yoga began to become a World Wide exercise that has since been embraced by millions of people as a way of life.

Essentially, traditional Yoga is made up of eight limbs that represent ethics, the physical body, breathing, consciousness, concentration, meditation and God. There are also five 'Yamas', which a 'Yogi', Yoga teacher, must adhere to, which are, non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, fidelity to God and non-grasping, meaning not being attached to material possessions.

History of Yoga

Yoga is a union of body, mind, and spirit. The history of yoga is long and steeped in tradition. Yoga is an ancient system of health and fitness which originated in India. The word yoga has its first mention in the Rig Veda, the oldest of the sacred texts. Those that study Yoga estimate it's age to be four thousand year.

The history of Yoga can be divided into four main periods which are the pre-classical period, classical period, post-classical period and modern period. In the history of yoga, the book is called the yoga sutras. The history of yoga would not have been completed in the classical stage of yoga.

The word Yoga literally meant the Yolk that joins something together, such as an ox to a cart. The idea is that yoga unites all aspects of being into one.

What most people envision to be Yoga, those contortionist postures, is really only one small aspect of a much larger field of practices. The methods of yoga includes ethical disciplines, physical postures, breathing control and as well as meditation.

The 20th century witnessed a renaissance of yoga that caused a globalization of this ancient tradition. Modern approaches to yoga have created a clear delineation between the Hindu religion and the practice of yoga. Through the practice of yoga, an individual can gain information about physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well being.

Over the long history of yoga, different schools have emerged, and there are numerous examples branches and philosophies that have spawned. Ultimately, all agree on one common element the fundamental purpose of yoga is to foster harmony in the body, mind, and environment.

Today yoga is accepted as a comprehensive exercise to promote control of the body and mind. More than just a means of being fit and trim, yoga can help you live a healthy, whole, and empowered life. In recent decades, yoga has greatly and swiftly evolved. Yoga is the most diversified spiritual practice in the world. The living tradition of yoga now recognizes no borders as it continues to spread globally.

Teaching Hatha Yoga - Student Retention Tips

What separates successful Yoga teachers from the rest? Yoga studios and ashrams are founded on a core of students who keep coming back to classes. We often refer to this as “student retention.” Let’s look at some methods to keep your students coming back for more Yoga classes.

Learn new techniques and integrate them into your Yoga classes. Many Yoga teachers think about changing asana sequencing to spice up their classes. You should also teach your students more Pranayama and meditation techniques. The eight limbs of Yoga, described by Patanjali, should all be covered in your classes, so that your students are familiar with the many aspects of Yoga.

Observe and develop empathy for your students. Some Yoga teachers still have issues with the use of props. In truth, we are all aging at this moment. A Yoga teacher, who cannot teach the elderly, the handicapped, or any student with limited range of motion, is also handicapped.

If Yoga teachers require students to be elite athletes, they should be coaching Olympic gymnasts. Coaching Olympians is a noble profession and worthy of note, but it has nothing to do with teaching Yoga to the average person, who wants to learn Yoga.

There is a huge population that attends Yoga for stress and anxiety. The Yoga teacher, without compassion, is not helping anyone by barking out commands in a “Brutal Boot Camp Yoga Class.” Some students do want these Yoga classes. However, these classes should be clearly labeled for new Yoga students and the unsuspecting public, who want to attend for the purpose of managing stress.

The History of Yoga

Yoga is an ancient practice and has been in existence for millennia. The word yoga comes from the Sanskirt work yuj. Yuj is often interpreted to mean union or a method of practice. .

It is believed that an Indian Sage named Patanjali created one of the first comprehensive guides on yogi. The book, called Yoga Sutra, was created approximately 2,000 years ago. This collection still serves as the basis for most forms of yoga practiced today.

The Yoga Sutra outlined the eight limbs of yoga as follows: the yamas (restraints), niyamas (observances), asana (postures), pranayama (breathing), pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), dharana (concentration), dhyani (meditation), and samadhi (absorption).

There are many branches of yoga. In Raja yoga the focus is on meditation. Karma yoga states that what we experience today is a result of past actions. In Bhakti yoga the focus is on channeling emotions in a positive manner. The various branches of yoga offer something for every taste and style.

Yoga is an extremely popular activity today. Once practiced mainly in the East Yoga has attracted more and more Western practitioners. People are attracted to yoga for its health benefits, especially its capacity to create a relaxed mind and body.

Most people practicing yoga in the west practice asana yoga. Asana yoga is designed to cultivate the mind and body in a manner that is conducive to long periods of meditation. Physical strength and stamina are key components of asana yoga.

Hatha yoga is the term used to mean a set of physical exercises. The exercises of hatha yoga are meant to align skin, muscles and bones. In addition, hatha seeks to open the channels of the body so that energy can flow freely.

In many forms of yoga a mantra is used. Om is a mantra that is often chanted at the beginning and end of a yoga session. Ancient yogis used this mantra to indicate the vibrations of the universe.
